Heh, I don't know what to tell you. I've tried it on myself and others where it works fine. It could mean that you don't use your eyes as much for speech recognition. Try watching his mouth intently and hear again.
For me it turns to a mix between dada/gaga instantly if I look, and baba when I don't look. A controlled synesthesia, I think it's super interesting and mind-freaking.
